Div. III Men's Basketball Players of the Week

For the week ending January 15, 2007

Division III - New England

Co-Player of the Week
 
Ryan Cain-Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Senior, Guard, Webster, Mass.

Cain helped WPI win three NEWMAC contests last week by averaging 25.7 points per game while connecting on 23-of-44 (52.3%) shots from the field and draining 22-of-24 ( 91.7%) free throws. He started his week with 28 points and three assists in an 82-75 road win at Springfield. Cain then tossed in 22 points and added three steals in a hard-fought 59-53 victory over Babson. He then led all scorers for a third straight game when he poured in 27 points, including 23 in the second half in a 77-61road win again Clark. Cain, who has now scored at least 20 points in nine straight WPI games, played in 113 of a possible 120 minutes last week.
 
Tyler Kathan-Keene State College
Sophomore, Forward, Ludlow, Vt.

Kathan averaged a double-double for the week, registering 23 points and 13.5 rebounds, as Keene State posted a 3-0 mark, including a pair of Little East Conference victories. On Jan. 11, he recorded career-highs in points (33) and rebounds (17) to lead the Owls past Springfield College. In the conference circuit, he scored 21 points and hauled in nine rebounds as Keene State defeated Western Connecticut, while logging 13 points and 10 rebounds at Southern Maine.

Player of the Week
 
Dave Maggiacomo-State University of New York at Cortland
Senior, Guard, Pleasant Valley, N.Y.

Maggiacomo scored a career-high 42 points and set a school single-game record with 10 three-pointers in the Red Dragons' 74-66 road win over Fredonia State. He was 14 of 18 from the field, including 10 of 12 from beyond the arc. The previous Cortland record was eight three-pointers set during the 1989-90 season. Maggiacomo is the first Red Dragon to score 40 points in a game in 12 years. He also had 16 points - including four treys - in a 68-53 loss at Buffalo State.

Player of the Week
 
Mike Hoyt- Mount Saint Mary College
Senior, Guard, Florida, N.Y.

Last week was another milestone week for Mount Saint Mary College senior guard Mike Hoyt who averaged 39.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.7 steals in a 2-1 week for the Blue Knights.  In a non-conference win over CCNY, Hoyt became the first player in Mount Saint Mary history to reach 2,000 career points.   He followed that performance up with a school-record 43 points in a Skyline victory over Mount Saint Vincent.  Hoyt scored 40 points, including 31 in the first half to give the Blue Knights the lead over Old Westbury at halftime.

Rashawn Johnson- Wesley College
Sophomore, Guard, Selbyville, Del.

Johnson averaged 23.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.0 assists Wolverines in a 2-0 (2-0 PAC) week.  The sophomore recorded 28 points and 9 rebounds against Eastern University and 19 points and 13 rebounds in team's overtime win versus Marywood University. 
 
Derrick Thornton-Lake Erie College
Forward, Sophomore, University Heights, Ohio

Thornton was the Storm's leading scorer and rebounder in both AMCC wins last week, helping LEC earn their ninth straight decision of the season and extend their home game winning streak to 21.   He scored a career-high 33 points against Mt. Aloysius, going 13-16 from the field.  Thornton finished with 23.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and a 65.5 FG%.
