Championship Game Recap

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Senior Sherod Harris (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and then was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Most Outstanding Player as The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team defeated SUNY Cortland 70-61 to win the ECAC Upstate New York Championship on Sunday afternoon in Brockport.

Harris led all Brockport (21-8 Overall) scorers with 18 points, and fellow senior Brandon Williams (Rochester, NY/Edison) added 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win.  Sophomore Jermaine Johnson (Queens Bridge, NY/Long Island City) chipped in with 12 points as Brockport won its first ECAC Championship since 1974.

The two teams traded baskets over the first 10 minutes of the first half but with Brockport leading 16-14, a three-point basket by sophomore Cantrel Parrish (Buffalo, NY/Grover Cleveland) sparked a 14-4 run pushing the Brockport lead to 30-18 with just under two minutes to play in the first half.  The Golden Eagles would take a 34-20 advantage into halftime after a Mychal Wilkes (Newark, NY/Newark) jumper.

Cortland (21-8 Overall) began the second half on a 7-0 run and also scored 11 of the first 14 points to cut the Brockport lead to 37-31 at the 14 minute mark of the half.  After a Harris jumper, Cortland cut the lead to five-points at 39-34 with a Ron Evans three-pointer.

Brockport would respond with five straight points pushing the lead back to double-digits at 44-34 with 12:12 to play in regulation.  The Red Dragons would make one final run late in the second half cutting the Brockport lead to five-points at 58-53 after a Mark Schaller three-point field goal.  A three-point answer by Brockport senior Aaron Poles (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) and another long-range bomb from Harris pushed the lead quickly back to double-digits at 64-53 with 2:53 to play.

Brockport would hit six-of-eight from the free throw line to close out the scoring and defeat the Red Dragons by a 70-61 final score, claiming the ECAC Championship.

Cortland was led by Paul Oliver with game-highs in points (20) and rebounds (14), while Evans added 14 points for the Red Dragons, who drop to Brockport for the second time this season.
