Maryland Terrapins Capture 2011 ECAC Women's Water Polo Crown

LEWISBURG, Pa. (February 27, 2011) - In a thrilling finish, the Terapins of the University of Maryland captured the 2011 ECAC Women's Water Polo Championship crown this afternoon.  Bucknell University served as host of this year's Championship in the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium in Lewisburg, Pa.  The eight team tournament required each team to play two games on Saturday to determine what place they would play for on Sunday.  

Day one action pitted No. 1 Princeton against No. 8 Wagner in the first match of the day.  Princeton advanced by a score of 12-8.  In the second match, Maryland defeated Marist by a score of 11-8.  The host Bison of Bucknell University came up short in the third match, losing to Iona by a score of 16-9.  In the final first round match, Harvard defeated Brown 9-5.

Later in the afternoon, Wagner defeated Marist 7-5.  Bucknell suffered another setback to Brown, 10-6.  Maryland edged Princeton 11-10, while Iona won a hard-fought battle against Harvard, 15-14. 

In Sunday's first match, the Bison secured seventh place with a victory over Marist, 10-7.  Wagner defeated Brown by a final score of 14-10 to clinch fifth place, while Princeton handled Havard, winning 12-3 to claim third place. 

The championship match pitted the fifth seeded Maryland Terrapins against the seventh seeded Gaels of Iona College.  In a thrilling match that came down to the final seconds, the Terrapins were able to hang on to a one point lead to claim the title by a final score of 12-11.  Senior Ally Beck (Mission Viejo, Ca.) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Kinney Natatorium is a 500-seat facility that can also hold another 300 spectators in the standing area.  It was also the site of the 2007 ECAC Men’s Water Polo Championship, in addition to multiple Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships and the 2005 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship.
