Women's Lacrosse Championship with a 10-5 Win at Home over
Georgian Court
Junior attackers Maggie Bornhorst and Shannon Shippey registered three goals apiece, helping the Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team to a 10-5 win over Georgian Court University on Friday, May 11th, at home in the championship game of the 2007 ECAC Division II Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Senior defender Carolyn Power (below right) was named the tournament MVP for the Lady Rams, who finish the year with a 10-4 overall record.
In the opening half, junior Allison Kessler scored two quick goals, staking Philadelphia University to a 3-1 lead, but the visiting Lions closed the gap to one goal at 3-2 on the 38th goal of the season for freshman midfielder Laura Housel at 18:52. However, Bornhorst and Shippey tallied a goal apiece late in the first half to extend the margin to 5-2 after 30 minutes of play. In the second half, Georgian Court scored first on a goal by freshman midfielder Natalie Bermudez at the 34:24 mark, but the Lady Rams came right back with a pair of goals from freshman Kathleen Maurer and junior Marissa Wisniewski, to extend the lead for good, cruising to the eventual five-goal victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Staerk finished with four saves for Philadelphia University, earning her seventh win of the season. Georgian Court freshman Christine Latteri was spectacular in a losing effort, finishing with 13 saves for the Lions.
