Baseball (for the week ending March 29, 2009)


Division I


Co-Players of the Week

Justin Bour - George Mason University
Junior, First Base, Centreville, Va.

Bour hit .471 (8-for-17) and drove in 11 runs in a 3-1 week for George Mason.  Against William & Mary, the junior hit two home runs, scored four runs, and knocked in nine more in three games, while batting .538.

Jason Stifler - Towson University
Senior, Catcher, Jarrettsville, Md.

In five games for Towson this week, Stifler hit .500 with 11 RBI.  The senior went 8-for-13 with three home runs and 10 RBI in a three-game series against James Madison and also threw out four of 11 base runners.


Pitcher of the Week

Joe DiRocco - Seton Hall University
Sophomore, Pitcher, East Hanover, N.J.

DiRocco threw a complete game shutout against Louisville to help the Pirates take two-of-three in the series.  The sophomore scattered six hits (all singles), struck out three, and walked one in the 6-0 triumph. 



Division II

Player of the Week

Kyle Orensky - West Chester University
Junior, Catcher, Wilmington, Del.

Orensky hit .444 in an undefeated week for the Rams, recording eight hits in 18 at bats.  He hit two home runs, including a grand slam against Mansfield and drove in 10 runs in five games this week. 


Pitcher of the Week

Keith Couch - Adelphi University
Sophomore, Pitcher, South Elmont, N.Y.

Couch made two appearances this week, throwing 14 innings and striking out 17.  He didn't allow a run, while also walking just three and giving up eight hits.  Couch highlighted his week with an 11-strikeout performance against St. Thomas Aquinas, in the 1-0 complete game shutout.



Division III - New England

 
Player of the Week

Melvin Castillo - Eastern Connecticut State University
Junior, Third Base, Danbury, Conn.

In a 4-1 week, Castillo hit .565 (13-for-23) with a 1.130 slugging and a .630 on-base percentage.  He recorded four multi-hit games, including back-to-back four-hit, four RBI performances against Calvin College and the University of Chicago.  For the week, Castillo hit three home runs and four doubles, while driving in nine runs and scoring nine times.


Pitcher of the Week

Tim Therrian - University of Southern Maine
Senior, Pitcher, New Portland, Maine

Against top ranked Eastern Connecticut State, Therrian gave up six hits, while striking out eight and walking none in a complete game victory, 7-1.  He did not allow a hit after the fourth inning and retired the last eight hitters he faced.



Division III - Upstate

 
Co-Players of the Week

Camden Mamigonian - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Junior, Outfielder, Dover, N.H.

Mamigonian led the Red Hawks to a 4-0 week, batting .588 (10-for-17) with three doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored, and 11 RBI.  In a 14-3 win over Vassar, he went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and four RBI.

Anthony Ferri - Skidmore College
Junior, Shortstop, Jersey City, N.J.

Ferri hit .727 in a 2-1 week for the Thoroughbreds with six runs, five RBI, hitting three doubles, a home run, and three stolen bases.  He was also solid defensively; recording 12 assists (second most in Division III) in a 4-3 win over Plattsburgh.


Pitcher of the Week

Dave Filak - SUNY Oneonta
Sophomore, Pitcher, Burnt Hills, N.Y.

Filak recorded two wins in a 4-1 week for the Red Dragons.  Against Fredonia, he threw a complete game, two-hit shutout with a career-high 13 strikeouts.  In 11 innings of work, Filak allowed three hits and no runs, while striking out 18 batters.


 
Division III - Metro

 
Player of the Week

Mike Moceri - Kean University
Junior, Second Base, Yardville, N.J.

Moceri hit .545 (12-for-22) with three doubles, two triples, a home run, six runs scored, and nine RBI in a 4-1 week for Kean.  He hit safely in four games and recorded three multi-hit contests.  In a sweep of Rowan, Moceri went 5-for-11 with two doubles, a home run, five RBI and three runs scored.


Pitcher of the Week

Connor Henderson - The College of New Jersey
Sophomore, Pitcher, Monmouth Junction, N.J.

Henderson led the Lions to a 2-1 victory over Rutgers-Camden, scattering six hits over 8.1 innings pitched and allowed just one walk and one run.  He struck out five and gave up just one extra-base hit. 



Division III - South

Player of the Week

Jim Little - University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg
Senior, Outfielder, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Little hit three homeruns this week, belting two two-run home runs against Penn State Altoona and a grand slam against Pitt-Bradford.  Against the Panthers, Little went 2-for-4 with six RBI and three runs scored.  He recorded at least three RBI in three out of four games this week.


Pitcher of the Week

Trevor Conner - Frostburg State University
Sophomore, Pitcher, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Conner ran his record to 3-0 this season with a complete game shutout against Franciscan.  He struck out eight batters, while allowing no walks and two hits in the 7-0 win.
