Keystone Claims Division III South Baseball Title

La Plume, PA (5-18-07) - Same teams, new place.  For the third consecutive year Keystone College and Washington and Jefferson College met in the title game of the ECAC South Region Baseball Championship game.

The 2006 and 2005 editions of the tournament were played in Washington, PA, until this year when Keystone was awarded the right to host.  With the Giants taking the crown in 2005 and the Presidents in 2006, the 2007 edition served as the series rubber match, albeit played over a three year span.

The Giants and Presidents did not disappoint battling it out in a pitchers duel, but it was a seventh inning double by Keystone's Ben Fish that drove in Deken Kline in what proved to be the game winner that lifted Keystone to a 3-1 victory and their second ECAC South Region Championship in three years.

Fish, who turned in a three for six day at that plate while also driving in two, was named as the Most Valuable Player of this year's event.

The Giants finish off their impressive year with a mark of 36-5, while Washington and Jefferson wraps up the season at 32-12.

Dominick Bartoli worked seven and a third innings to notch the win, allowing five hits and one unearned run.  Bartoli improved to 6-0 on the year, while also lowering his earned run average to 1.27.  Brett Repard worked the final inning and two-thirds for the save.

Kline and Jason Shifler each collected two hits in the championship game, while Donald Reese knocked in two.

Warren Stowe picked up the Presidents lone RBI in the game as W & J collected five hits.

The day's middle contest saw top seeded Keystone down fourth seeded Alvernia 4-1.

The Knights jumped out early taking a 1-0 lead in top of third before Keystone responded with four unanswered runs to come away with the victory.

Tim Carroll recorded a two-out triple and scored on a bunt single by Ryan Mark in the third as the Knights struck first in the scoring column.

Keystone knotted things at one in the fourth when Nelson Gomez singled to open the inning and came around to score on a one-out single by Ben Fish

The Giants went ahead to stay in the fifth when Donald Reese hit a two-run home run to right-center, plating Jason Shifler as well.   Keystone added an insurance run in the seventh when Gomez reached base via a base on balls and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Yadiel Lanzo was masterful on the mound for the Giants, picking up his ninth win of the season.  Yadiel worked a complete game scattering six hits and striking out four.

Gomez turned in a three for four day at the plate with two runs scored, while Reese was two for four with his home run providing the day's big blast.  Ben Fish also picked up a pair of hits and an RBI.

Ryan Mark led the Knights with two hits on the afternoon.  Alvernia finished its season at 27-14.

In the day's opening game second seeded Washington & Jefferson downed third seeded Wesley 4-2.

The Presidents pushed across single runs in the first and fifth innings before adding two insurance runs in the bottom half of the eight.  Wesley would score twice in the ninth to make a game out of it, but the Presidents cut short the Wolverines rally.

Washington & Jefferson used back-to-back doubles by Sam Mann and Chris Varacallo with one out in the first to jump out to the 1-0 lead.  The Presidents second run came in the fifth when Nick Fiorilli doubled advanced to third on a ground out and came around to score on a Mann sacrifice fly.

They would extend the lead to 4-0 in the eight when Shaun Pfeil and Matt Pellis put together back-to-back singles, while also taking advantage of an error that put Washington & Jefferson players at second and third with one out.

Ron Mitko dropped down a bunt single to score Pfeil for a 3-0 lead before Sean Ray's sacrifice fly closed out the scoring.

Wesley opened the ninth with a single by Scott Marshall and a double by Corey Huemmer to put runners on second and third with no-one out.  An RBI ground out by Dan Bunnion and an RBI single by Cody Pidgeon was all the offense that the Wolverines could muster.

The Presidents knocked out eight hits, with Pellis leading the way with two hits.  Winning pitcher Sam Mann doubled, while picking up an RBI and scoring a run.  On the mound Mann went eight and a third innings for the victory while striking out five.  Mitko picked up the save working the final two-thirds.

Kevin Ellis and Bunnion each picked up two hits as Wesley picked up eight on the day.  Wesley ends its season with a mark of 30-14.
