New York University Wins 2008 ECAC Division III Metro/Upstate Womens Volleyball Championship
Top-seeded New York University defeated third-seed SUNY Potsdam
3-0 to win the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Upstate Championship, Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Jerome S. Coles
Sports Center on the campus of NYU in Manhattan.
This was NYU first ECAC Championship in 21 years. The team won the
ECAC South Championship in 1987.
Sophomore Kasey
Estes, who was named the ECAC Upstate Championship Most
Outstanding Player, led the way with 11 kills while hitting .308 as
the Violets (25-16) defeated the Bears (21-16) 25-18, 25-18,
25-13.
"Even though we were disappointed we did not qualify for the NCAA
Tournament, we were very happy to qualify for postseason play and
get our players this type of experience," said NYU head coach
Ed Caesar. "They showed the will to win."
In the first set, the Violets jumped out to an early
lead and took a 15-7 advantage off a kill from
freshman Kolby
Warren. Potsdam attempted a rally, coming within 22-16 off a
kill from junior Alison Pepe. But, two consecutive kills from
freshman Elizabeth
Dick sealed it for NYU.
The Bears kept the score close in the second set, coming within one
at 15-14 off of an NYU attack error. However, NYU took over after
that, winning 10 of the next 12 points en route to
another win.
In the third set, the Violets ran away with it early, taking a 19-9
lead off of a service ace from sophomore Rachel
Sawyer. NYU continued its onslaught, taking six of the final 10
points to seal the championship.
On offense, Dick was also in double-digits for NYU, as she put down
12 kills while hitting .385. Freshman setter Jillian
Tremmel recorded 39 assists and three service aces, while
Sawyer led the team with 19 digs.
For the Bears, senior Sammie Pickering recorded 11 kills. Freshman
setter Courtney Falconer put up 25 assists, while sophomore Kim
Plummer notched 12 digs on defense.
"I am especially happy with the way we developed as a team
this year," Caesar concluded. "People like Tremmel and Estes have
progressed so much throughout the season, and we are looking
forward to what's coming next year."
