Princeton wins 1999 ECAC Women's Tennis Championship
PRINCETON, N.J. -- After jumping out to an early 4-2 advantage in the singles matches, Princeton University needed the final doubles match of the day to defeat the University of Virginia, 5-4, in the 1999 ECAC Women's Tennis Invitational Championship.
Kavitha Krishnamurthy won in straight sets over Amy O'Donnell 7-5, 6-4 to lead things off and then Jyotsna Vasisht defeated Christine Schweer in three sets for a 2-0 lead. Princeton got the third singles match as well, when Amanda Hastings-Phillips topped of Henriette Williams in straight sets. Virginia managed to get the fourth and fifth singles matches behind Leslie Cook and Jen Tuchband to draw within one point (3-2). Kristi Watson came from a set down to defeat Kelly Weaver to earn the final point in the singles portion and put the Tigers ahead, 4-2.
Virginia took the first two doubles matches that were played to tie things up a 4-all and set up a match between each team's top doubles pair. Hastings-Phillips and Gailor Large defeated Schweer and Cook 8-5 for the deciding point and the title.
Princeton had advanced to the championship match with victories over James Madison (6-0), Penn (5-1), and Harvard (5-4) in the semifinals.
