William Smith Wins ECAC Upstate Women's Soccer in Penalty Kicks

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- After  playing 120 minutes of scoreless
soccer, William Smith College won the Eastern College Athletic
Conference Upstate Tournament 3-0 in penalty kicks, Sunday afternoon at
Skidmore College's Wachenheim Field.

The game goes down as a tie for the two teams.  William Smith finishes
the season 11-5-3, while Utica is 11-8-2.

The Herons dominated the game, out shooting Utica 15-3.  Pioneer
goalie Ashley Kaufman (Enfield, Conn.) stopped all 10 shots she faced,
including a one-on-one with William Smith's Julie Bernay (Newport
Beach, Calif.) in the first overtime.

Utica defender Joanne Gueverra (Marshfield, Mass) also had a big role
in shutting down the Herons.

Liberty League Player of the Year Laura Burnett-Kurie (Durham, N.H.)
opened the penalty kicks, going to her left for the score and a 1-0
William Smith lead.  Utica's Kelly Regan (Massapequa, N.Y.) missed wide
left.  Katie Compton (West Hartford, Conn.) made it 2-0 low right.

Heron keeper Nikki Dudley (Chittenango, N.Y.) saved Rachel Tinao's
(Point Pleasant, N.J.).  Rayza Santiago (Webster, N.Y.) made it 3-0 for
William Smith.  Sarah Richards (Stafford, Conn.) tried to keep Utica in
the shootout, but her shot sailed high.

The tournament MVP was William Smith sophomore forward Ali Art

William Smith Advances in ECAC Soccer with 1-0 Win Over St. John Fisher

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-Laura Burnett-Kurie (Durham, N.H.) broke 0-0
tie with a breakaway goal with 16:18 to play in regulation to give
William Smith College a 1-0 win over St. John Fisher College, Saturday
in the Eastern College Athetic Conference  Upstate Tournament
semifinal.
      
The Herons will face the winner of Saturday's other semifinal between
Skidmore College and Utica College in the championship game on Sunday
at 1 p.m.
      
Both teams had opportunities in the scoreless first half.  The Herons
nearly scored two minutes into the game when Fisher keeper Stacey Gable (Derby, N.Y.) stopped Burnett-Kurie on an original shot and then again on attempt off the rebound.      

William Smith (11-5-2) controlled the play in the second half, but
Fisher was able to keep the Herons off the board, until William Smith
back Tracy Stankavage (Chittenango, N.Y.) sent Burnett-Kurie in alone
for the game-winner.  It was the 10th goal of the season for the
Liberty League Player of the Year.

Gable played the first half and registered four saves for the
Cardinals, while Ashley Martin (Marcellus, N.Y.) had seven second-half
saves to keep the game close.  Nikki Dudley (Chittenango, N.Y.) had two saves for her sixth shutout of the season.


Skidmore-Utica
After 56 minutes of scoreless soccer, Skidmore and Utica traded penalty kicks within a 53 second span. Rachael Sushner (Potomac, Md.) gave the Thoroughbreds a 1-0 lead at 56:02 after Anna Cerio (Alfred, N.Y.) was pulled down in the box. The Pioneers received the same opportunity at 56:55. Kerry Walsh (Franklin, Mass.) converted the penalty for her seventh goal of the season a 1-1 tie.
Utica (11-8-1) took a 2-1 lead at 61:53 when Danielle Smith (Verona, N.Y.) worked her way into the corner and then found Ashley Granger (Sutton, Mass.) alone in front for her 10th goal of the season. Smith made it 3-1 at 66:18 after dribbling through two defenders and going in alone on Thoroughbred goalie Liza Mills (Setauket, N.Y.).
Skidmore (12-4-4) out shot Utica 17-7. Pioneer goalie Ashley Kaufman (Enfield, Conn.) had 10 saves. Mills finished with three saves.
