Fairfield Wins 2006 ECAC Open North Men's Tennis Championship
Poughkeepsie, NY- Fairfield University won singles matches at
the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions enroute to capturing the 2006
ECAC North Tennis Championships Sunday afternoon hosted by Vassar
College.
The Stags led the field with 12 points, followed by Vassar in
second (8) and a three-way tie for third with St. Peter's,
SUNY-Oneonta and New York University each having 5.5 points.
Vassar captured the No. 5 singles spot while NYU took the No. 1
singles spot. Vassar also won the No. 1 doubles competition.
Fairfield's Ryan Berthold defeated JJ Grammatica of St. Peter's,
6-3, 6-4, to win the No. 2 singles title. At third singles, FU's
Chip Palumbo defeated Vassar's Mike Mattelson 6-4, 6-1. Fairfield's
final singles victory came at No. 4, where Zack Morrison upended
Oneonta's Matt Steinhauser, 6-4, 6-2.
NYU's Mikhail Gurevich won the No. 1 singles championship with a
7-6, 7-6 slugfest win over Fairfield's John Fernando.
Vassar's Jeremy Rosen outdueled Andrew Maple of St. Peter's to
claim the No. 5 singles title, 6-2, 6-4.
VC also took the sole doubles competition with the team of
Mayer/Babbage defeating Oneonta's Kanzaki/Pettus, 6-3, 6-4.
