Div. III Men's Soccer Players of the Week

For the week ending September 9, 2007

Division III - New England

Offensive Player of the Week

Christian Therkelsen - Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Freshman, Forward,
Nesbru, Norway

Therkelsen began the week by scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over Salve Regina.  Then he recorded a hat trick in MIT's 3-2 victory over RIC.

Defensive Player of the Week

Chris Smart - Wheaton College
Freshman, Goalkeeper,
Brookfield, Conn.

Smart won all three decisions for his team this week while posting a 0.73 GAA.  He made eight saves in a 1-1 tie with Keene State, and only needed to make a total of four saves to top Bridgewater State (7-2) and Salve Regina (2-1).

Division III - Upstate

Offensive Player of the Week

Nick Callahan - Utica College
Senior, Forward,
Stillwater, N.Y.

Callahan scored five times and added an assist in Utica's 8-0 defeat of Potsdam.

Defensive Player of the Week

Jonathan Rushing - Clarkson University
Senior, Goalkeeper, Paw Paw,
Mich.

Rushing recorded his first career shutout with five saves in a 1-0 win over No. 15 Geneseo - Clarkson's first victory over a ranked opponent since 1998.  In a 1-0 setback against Rochester, he made three saves.

Division III - Metro

Offensive Player of the Week

Aleksander Kirov - Bard College
Senior, Forward,
Varna, Bulgaria

Kirov scored four straight goals during Bard's 7-0 victory over Southern Vermont, and then scored his team's only goal in a 2-1 loss to Becker.

Defensive Player of the Week

Nick Mele - Montclair State University
Junior, Goalkeeper,
Delran, N.J.

Mele recorded a total of 16 saves in three shutouts this week.  MSU defeated Staten Island 5-0, tied Swarthmore 0-0, and beat Skidmore 1-0.  In the Swarthmore game, he collected nine saves.  Mele has still not surrendered a goal in 425 minutes of action this season.

Division III - South

Offensive Player of the Week

Jesse Urguhart - Neumann College
Junior, Forward, Erial, N.J.

Urguhart set up the game-winning goal and later converted a penalty kick in a 3-1 win against the University of District Columbia.  He tallied both his team's goals in a shutout of McDaniel, and then ended the week with a pair of assists in a 3-2 victory over King's College.

Defensive Player of the Week

Ryan Sutcliffe - Swarthmore College
Senior, Goalkeeper,
Milford, Del.

Sutcliffe did not allow a goal in two ties this week, against Arcadia and No. 11 Montclair State.  He has not allowed a goal in the last 298 minutes of action.
