Carnegie Mellon Defeats Gettysburg 4-1 to Win ECAC South Championship
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Senior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) capped off an illustrious career by scoring three goals and leading the Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team to the ECAC Division III Men's South Soccer Championship. Carnegie Mellon faced Gettysburg College in the Championship game on Sunday, November 12 and came away with a 4-1 victory.
The Tartans came into the eight team tournament as the number
two seed and defeated Westminster College on Wednesday and Alvernia
College on Saturday to reach the championship game.
Browne, the school's all-time goal and points leader, scored just
83 seconds into the game by using his head to redirect a header by
freshman midfielder Jonathan Simon (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) into
the net.
Browne's second goal happened in the 13th minute off a cross from
the right corner by senior midfielder Will Schlough (Stratham,
N.H./Exeter). The ball bounced free in the box and Browne one-timed
a shot from five yards out past Bullets goalkeeper Matt
Langston.
Standing near the right post, Browne registered the hat trick in
the 16th minute when he one-timed a pass from senior forward Andrew
Park (Boise, Idaho) into the goal. This marks his third career
hat-trick and first since his sophomore year.
Park added a goal of his own in the 56th minute when he collected
his blocked shot and laced the ball inside the far left post from
18 yards out.
Gettysburg ended Carnegie Mellon's shutout bid in the 80th minute
when forward Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School)
one-timed a pass from defender Ross Witte (Emmaus, Pa.) into the
net past backup senior goalkeeper Robert Vargo (West Mifflin, Pa.).
The shot hit the crossbar and deflected down into the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes,
N.J./Delbarton) made five saves in the win. Langston stopped four
shots on the day.
The Tartans outscored their opponents 10-1 in the ECAC tournament.
Browne was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
Carnegie Mellon wraps up their season with a 14-5 record and
Gettysburg finishes with a 12-6-4 mark.
Carnegie Mellon and Gettysburg to Play In ECAC South Championship
Nov. 11 - (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - On a wet Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Mellon men's soccer team hosted the semifinals of the 2006 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men's South Soccer Championships. In the second game of the semifinals, Carnegie Mellon defeated the Alvernia Crusaders 3-0 behind a strong early second half to earn a place in the championship game Sunday. The Tartans improve to 13-5 on the season while Alvernia College concludes their season at 11-6-4.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first half before Carnegie
Mellon senior forward Jonathan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas
Jefferson) got the Tartans on the board in the 51st minute.
Freshman midfielder Jonathan Simon (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley)
crossed the ball from the left end line back to Browne in the
center of the box who one-timed the pass into the net for his
team-leading 10th goal of the season. Senior forward Andrew Park
(Boise, Idaho) had a breakaway in the 56th minute and, with
Crusaders goalkeeper Richard Kessler charging, Park ran onto the
ball first, and his sliding shot from 30 yards out got past Kessler
and into the net.
The Tartans wrapped up their scoring in the 63rd minute when Simon
headed in a cross off a pass from freshman midfielder Ryan Browne
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson).
Sophomore Matthew Bazin (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Delbarton) and
senior Robert Vargo (West Mifflin, Pa.) combined on the shutout
with Bazin stopping three shots and Vargo collecting one save.
Kessler made eight saves in the loss. Carnegie Mellon out shot the
Crusaders 17-6 on the day.
The Gettysburg Bullets took on Grove City College in the first
game of the semifinals and defeated the Wolverines 2-0. Gettysburg
midfielders Kieran Lade and Ryan Peiffer each scored goals in the
win. Lade's goal came in the 68th minute and Peiffer added an
insurance goal in the 82nd minute.
The Tartans advance to play Gettysburg in the ECAC South
Championship game tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Gesling Stadium here at
Carnegie Mellon.
Penn State Altoona Upset in ECAC playoffs
The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team, ranked third in the ECAC
South Region, were stunned by sixth-seeded Alvernia 1-0 Thursday
evening at Spring Run Stadium. Both teams battled soggy field
conditions and tornado-like winds that contributed to the game's
only tally. At the 39:10 mark of the first half, the
Crusaders' Zach Naylon lofted a direct kick from just outside the
top left portion of the box. Penn State Altoona goalkeeper
Mike Ginnona thought he had a play on the ball and took two steps
forward, but the wind carried the ball over his head and into the
goal, resulting in the 1-0 Crusader advantage.
The Lions had the wind at their backs in the second half but were
unable to find the net, despite out-shooting Alvernia 15-3 on the
night. Crusader goalkeeper Richard Kessler had five saves on
the evening for Alvernia, who moves on to meet second-seeded
Carnegie Mellon in the ECAC semifinals. Altoona wrapped up an
excellent 2006 campaign at 14-4-2 overall and finished second in
the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Shootout win sends Grove City to ECAC semis
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team earned a trip to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament semifinals by earning a 1-1 double-overtime shootout victory over top-seeded Swarthmore in the a quarterfinal match Wednesday night. Grove City, the No. 8 seed in the eight-team bracket, won the shootout 3-1.
Grove City will now play either No. 4 Wesley or No. 5 Gettysburg in Saturday's semifinals. Inclement weather forced the Wesley-Gettysburg quarterfinal match to be moved to Thursday afternoon. Second-seeded Carnegie Mellon will host Saturday's semifinals as the top remaining seed. CMU defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Westminster, 3-0, Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.
In the shootout, Grove City scored on all three attempts. Senior forward Bob McNees (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) gave Grove City a 1-0 lead in the shootout after the Garnet (12-5-2) were rebuked by junior goalkeeper Michael Manahan (State College, Pa./State College).
Swarthmore tied the match in the second round but the Wolverines reclaimed a 2-1 lead as sophomore Tyler Ferrier (Newtown Square, Pa./Delaware County Christian) scored. Following a Swarthmore miss, senior defender Brendan McCommas (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) scored Grove City's third shootout goal. A second straight Swarthmore miss sealed the win for Grove City (11-6-2).
Swarthmore took a 1-0 lead at 4:45 as Stu Leon scored from point-blank range. Yoi Tibbetts supplied the assist. However, the Wolverines rebounded later in the first half as Ferrier scored the equalizer at 26:19. Senior Jonathan Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) assisted the goal.
