Gettysburg downs Kean in double OT for
ECAC title; Goddu breaks record, earns MVP nod

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) scored twice, including the game-winner in double overtime, to lift 16th-ranked Gettysburg over Kean 2-1 in the finals of the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship on Sunday. Goddu tipped in a shot by Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/LancasterCatholic) to finish a 3-on-2 break with 12:09 left in the second overtime period, giving the Bullets (17-6) their first ECAC title. Goddu also etched her name in the Gettysburg record book with the goal, setting the mark for most goals in a single season (23). She had trailed Amy Washburn's 22-goal campaign in 1993 entering Sunday's final. Goddu, who scored the game-winner in the Bullets' opening-round win against Oneonta State, was also named the tournament's most valuable player. She finished with a game-high six shots. Allison Green scored for the Cougars, who were trying to knock off their third nationally ranked opponent is as many tournament games. Kean (14-6) advanced to the final with wins over No. 19 Franklin & Marshall and No. 20 King's. Cherie McNellis contributed the assist on Green's goal while Concetta Valerio recorded seven saves in the loss. In an end-to-end contest worthy of a championship final, Goddu
and her senior teammates made their last collegiate game a
memorable one. On Kean's fourth penalty corner of the half, McNellis gathered the initial hit from Katie Burrini and send a pass to Green, who blasted a shot past Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame) to make it 1-0 at 24:37. Moments later Stephanie Cirino nearly doubled the Cougars' lead, but Michelle Marsnick (Towaco, NJ/MontvilleTwp.) made the defensive play of the game, diving to knock the shot off the goal line. After managing only one shot and one corner in the first half, Gettysburg unleashed 14 shots and forced 14 corners after the break. Valerio stopped a blast from Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) and snuffed a breakaway attempt by Downey to temporarily preserve the lead, but Goddu finished an individual move in front to knot the game at 1 with 16:39 left in regulation. Despite corners at both ends, neither team could find the winner until early in the second overtime. On the winning play, Downey cruised to the top of the circle on a 3-on-2 break and blasted a drive that Goddu tipped past Valerio to deliver the Bullets' championship. With the win, Gettysburg concluded the year with a 12-1 record at home and a 5-0 mark in overtime games. The Bullets' victory total (17) matched the program's single-season record set in 1998 and 1999. |

Downey's penalty stroke goal leads Gettysburg over
Catholic, 1-0
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored the game's lone goal on a penalty stroke late in the first half to give Gettysburg the win over Catholic, 1-0, in the first game of the semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championships on Saturday.
With the win, the Bullets avenged an early season 2-0 loss to the Cardinals on September 14th.
After a Catholic defensive goal line save on a shot by Downey, a Cardinal player fell on the ball and was whistled for obstruction. On the ensuing Gettysburg penalty stroke, Downey scored with a shot to the lower left corner.
In the second half, Gettysburg held Catholic without a penalty corner while the Cardinals held the Bullets off the scoreboard despite giving away nine penalty corners.
Jayme Dinsmore and Michele Repass led the Catholic attack with three shots each while netminder Irene Jordan recorded four saves, including three in the second half.
For the game, both teams earned nine shots, but Gettysburg held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Bullet goalkeeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) recorded six saves in posting her eighth shutout of the season, and second in as many games in the ECAC Championship.
Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) led Gettysburg in shots with four and had a goal called back 22 minutes into the game on a foot call.
Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday at home in the championship game of the ECAC tournament against the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Kean and King's. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
Kean advances to ECAC Semifinal with
2-0 win over Franklin &
Marshall
UNION, N.J. – (11/9/05) Kean
University’s Allison Green (West Deptford, N.J.) scored a
goal in each half to lead the third seeded Cougars past sixth
seeded Franklin & Marshall College, 2-0 in the opening round of
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament on
Wednesday evening. With the victory, Kean improved to 13-5 and
advances to play #2 King’s College on Saturday, while the
Diplomats end the season with a mark of 12-7.
The Cougars jumped on the board when Green
took a pass from Vicki Egerer (Washington, N.J.) and fired a
shot that was stopped, but she followed up the shot and put home
the rebound with 12:20 left in the first half. With just over 13 minutes
to go in the game, KU’s Cherie McNellis (Magnolia, N.J.) sent
a shot to the back post where Green deflected the ball out of mid
air and into the cage to ice the game.
The assist for McNellis was her 21st of her
career and that moved her into first place all time in school
history. She was in a tie with Deanna Thomas who recorded 21
assists from 2000-2003.
In the net for the Cougars, senior
goalkeeper Concetta Valerio (Norristown, Pa.) stopped nine
shots, while the F&M keeper Michelle Altman (Trumbull,
Conn.) made
nine saves. The shutout for Valerio was the 23rd of her career and
she set a new school record moving past Michele Swawola who had 22
from 1993-1996.
The game was delayed for over an hour late
in the second half due to a lighting storm that rolled through the
area.
Kings Tallies 3-1 Victory Over
Hartwick
ONEONTA, NY – Sophomore forward Sarah McGrady (Nanticoke
Area HS/Plymouth, PA) scored two goals and assisted on a third to
lead King’s College to a 3-1 win over Hartwick College in the
quarterfinals of the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Tournament at
Hartwick’s All-Weather Field on Wednesday afternoon.
McGrady tallied the first goal of the match with 14:31 left in the first half, when she redirected a wide shot by junior forward Lindsay Sabo (Delaware Valley/Milford, Pa.) into the back of the net.
King’s extended the lead to 2-0 with 14:09 left in the contest as Sabo tallied off of a cross from McGrady.
The Monarch’s lead increased to 3-0 with 8:10 left in the game when McGrady dodged a defender and flicked a shot into the cage.
Hartwick mustered its lone goal with no time left on the clock in the contest, as Hartwick played out a series of penalty corners that was finally capped by a goal from Caroline Uhran (Madison/Morristown, N.J.), who blasted a shot from the top of the circle after Jenev Schilling (Martha’s Vineyard/Oak Bluffs, Mass.) sent the ball from the end line to Meg Hughes (Hollan Patent/Holland Patent, N.Y.) stick stop.
Hartwick ends its season with a 9-9 overall record. The Hawks captured the Empire 8 title this season with a perfect 4-0 record in conference play.
The Monarchs (15-4) advance to the ‘final four’ of the ECAC Tournament, which will be played at top-seed Gettysburg, a 3-0 winner over Oneonta State today.

Goddu’s game-winning goal leads
Gettysburg over
Oneonta State in ECAC
first round, 3-0
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) scored the game-winning goal 53 seconds into the second half en route to a 3-0 Gettysburg victory over Oneonta State in the first round of the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Championship on Wednesday.
After a scoreless first half, Goddu got Gettysburg on the board early in the second to put the Bullets up for good. She redirected a cross from Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) that found the bottom right corner past the outstretched Red Dragon goalie.
Goddu’s goal marked her 21st of the 2005 campaign, leaving her one shy of the Bullets’ record for goals in a season.
In the 43rd minute, Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) settled a penalty corner restart from Krissy Browning (Baldwin, MD/Fallston), faked a shot and played it past an onrushing defender into the arc. Latta ran onto her own pass and one-timed it into the back of the net to stretch the Gettysburg lead to 2-0.
Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) closed out the scoring on another penalty corner situation in the 51st minute. Downey received the short corner pass from Browning, beat a defender and fired a shot that found the back of the cage.
Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) made seven saves to secure her seventh shutout of the season.
For Oneonta State, goalie Lindsey Hendricks made nine saves. Offensively, Kate Yarmowich and Musu Jackson-Buckner led the Red Dragons with two shots each.
