Div. III Football Players of the Week

For the week ending October 28, 2007

Division III - Northeast

Offensive Player of the Week

Marlon Thorton - Fitchburg State College
Freshman, Running Back,
Bloomfield, Conn.

Thornton amassed 256 yards and four touchdowns on 44 carries in Fitchburg's win over Westfield State.  The freshman also hauled in three passes for 37 yards.

Defensive Player of the Week

Brian Field - U.S. Coast Guard Academy
Junior, Linebacker,
Wantagh, N.Y.

Field tallied 16 tackles, including five solo stops and a tackle for a loss in the Bears' victory over Maine Maritime.  The junior also contributed a fumble recovery and an interception to seal the victory.

Division III - Northwest

Co-Offensive Players of the Week

Andrew Strom - Hobart College
Senior, Quarterback,
Novato, Calif.

Strom, once again, put up staggering numbers for Hobart, as the Statesmen knocked off previously-unbeaten and 11th ranked Alfred College. The senior signal caller threw for four touchdowns and 229 yards, rushed for 44 yards, and had a 13-yard reception.  Strom broke the Hobart single-season record for yards of total offense.

Clarence Onyiriuka - University of Rochester
Freshman, Running Back, Painted Post, N.Y.

Onyiriuka rushed for three touchdowns and 219 yards on 33 carries leading Rochester past Susquehanna.  The freshman also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass and ran for a two-point conversion in the contest.

Defensive Player of the Week

Tim Acker - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Sophomore, Defensive Back,
Arlington, Wash.

Acker collected a game-high 15 tackles, including nine solo stops, as RPI defeated WPI in double overtime.  The sophomore also tied a school record with three interceptions.

Division III - Southeast

Offensive Player of the Week

Michael Jump - Montclair State University
Senior, Quarterback, Toms River, N.J.

Jump threw for three touchdowns and 264 yards on 13 of 28 passes in leading Montclair State past Rowan. The senior averaged 21 yards per completion in the victory. 

Defensive Player of the Week

Dave Fontoura - The College of New Jersey
Junior, Defensive Back,
Roseland, N.J.

Fountura returned an interception 81 yards for a touchdown to secure the shutout in TCNJ's victory over Cortland State.  The junior also contributed four tackles on the day.

Division III - Southwest

Offensive Player of the Week

Robert Heller - Waynesburg University
Freshman, Running Back,
Monongahela, Pa.

Heller averaged 9.6 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns as Waynesburg fell to unbeaten W&J.  The freshman tallied an impressive 289 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries.  Heller broke two school records in the process; the single-game rushing yards record and the single-season touchdown record.

Defensive Player of the Week

Sean Matthews - Wesley College
Junior, Linebacker,
Pennsauken, N.J.

Matthews produced a solid defensive effort for 10th ranked Wesley, as the Wolverines upended 8th ranked Salibury on Saturday.  The junior compiled 14 tackles, including seven unassisted stops and 1.5 tackles for a loss.  Matthews also forced a fumble and had a pass breakup.
