Senior Garet Lynch (Valley Stream, NY/Springville Gardens) set
several school records and established a new NCAA Division III
rushing record as he led The College at Brockport Football team to
a thrilling 70-68 victory over Hartwick College Saturday in the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northwest Bowl game at
Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. Lynch was named the Most Valuable
Player of the game as he rushed for an NCAA record 370 yards in the
first half.
Lynch established a new school record for rushing yards in a game
midway through the second quarter. He also smashed the school
season rushing record as he finished the season with 1,665 yards
and also set a new school record for TDs in a game with his seven
scores.
Brockport (7-4) trailed 62-42 with just over two minutes to play in
the third quarter but scored on a Lynch 4-yard run near the end of
the quarter to cut the lead to 62-49. After a shot punt on the
first play of the fourth quarter, Brockport marched down the field
and scored on a Zack Luke (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge) to Felipe Diaz
(Syracuse, NY/Onondaga) pass to make it a 62-56 score.
Nick Duchscherer (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston-Porter) intercepted a
pass three plays later which eventually led to a Lynch scoring run
- his seventh of the game - from one-yard out to give the Golden
Eagles their first lead of the game at 63-62 with 7:17 left in the
game.
On the next Hartwick possession, Neil Fay (Olean, NY/Olean) made an
open field tackle after a completed pass, stripped the ball away
from the receiver and ran 61 yards into the endzone for a 70-62
lead.
Hartwick (7-3) rallied for a score with three minutes to play but a
two-point conversion attempt was intercepted in the endzone by Ryan
Hynes (Dansville, NY/Dansville). The Hawks defense held Brockport
with less than a minute to play and had one last chance to move
into field goal range but two incomplete passes and a sack by
defensive end Josh Day (Hornell, NY/Hornell) - his fourth of the
day - to end the game.
The 70 points in a game tied the school record set back in 1981
when Brockport defeated Brooklyn College, 70-8. The combined score
of 138 breaks the school record set earlier this year of 99 points
by nearly 40 points. Jeff Cook (Rochester, NY/Penfield) broke the
school record for extra points in a game with 10 successful kicks.
