ECAC Announces 2019 Division I Men's Lacrosse All-ECAC and Major Award Winners
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2019 Division I Men’s Lacrosse Awards and All-ECAC selections.
Penn State was a big winner, having Grant Ament take home Offensive Player of the Year and Jeff Tambroni win Coach of the year. Johnny Surdick from Army won Defensive Player of the Year, while Sam Handley from the University of Pennsylvania claimed rookie of the year honors.
Ament leads nation's top-scoring offense as the Nittany Lions captured the program's first Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, en route to the NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed. He set an NCAA Division I single-season record with 78 assists while leading the nation with 5.57 assists per game and 7.21 points per game. Ament ranks second nationally with 101 points, a Penn State program record. Ament was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, First Team USILA All-American and is a Tewaaraton finalist.
Johnny Surdick captained Army to the program’s second Patriot League title and was a Tewaaraton awards semifinalist. The senior ranked seventh in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.00) and anchored the Black Knight’s Defense which ranks second nationally with an 8.35 scoring defense rating. Surdick was just named First Team USILA All-American. The Patriot league Defensive Player of the Year was the first defender picked in the inaugural Premier Lacrosse League College Draft and was sixth overall.
Sam Handley was the unanimous Ivy league Rookie of the year to go along with being named first team All-Ivy, and Ivy League Rookie of the Week four times throughout the year. An Inside Lacrosse first team All-American, Handley set Penn freshman records for goals (34), assists (24), and points (58). Handley was also named First Team USILA All-American.
Jeff Tambroni led Penn State to a 14-1 record, setting a program record for wins, including an 11-game winning streak. After winning both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles for the first time, the Nittany lions were selected as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, marking their second appearance in three years and fifth overall.
