ECAC Announces DIII Softball Major Awards & All-ECAC Selections
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2018 Division III Softball major award recipients and All-ECAC selections.
Vada Blue Sherrill of Pfeiffer University collected ECAC Player of the Year, and Jazmyn Rohrer from Westminster College was voted the Pitcher of the Year. Infielder Rachel Johnson of Washington & Jefferson College earned Rookie of the Year, while Pfeiffer’s Head Coach Monte Sherrill was named ECAC Coach of the Year to complete the major awards.
Sherrill was named ECAC Player of the Year after an outstanding junior campaign. The shortstop finished the season with a .508 batting average and went a perfect 56-for-56 in stolen bases. In her 42 games, Sherrill clubbed 16 home runs, drove in 69 runs and scored 64 times, all were program records. Additionally, Sherrill set the single-season team record for on-base percentage (.593) and slugging percentage (.992) to lead the Falcons to an ECAC Championship.
Rohrer led the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) in earned-run average (0.88), strikeouts (254) and opposing batting average (.156) and was second in victories (21) and appearances (30). Her strikeouts per seven innings (10.1) rank sixth in NCAA Division III, while her hits allowed per seven innings (3.87) ranked eighth. Her ERA ranks sixth in Division III and her strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.94) ranks 11th. She also holds Westminster College’s career strikeouts record with 565.
Johnson led the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and ranked 17th in Division III with a .492 batting average, compiling 61 hits in 124 at-bats. Of her 61 base hits, 22 went for extra bases, including 20 doubles, tied for eighth most in the nation, to go along with a 17-of-18 mark on stolen base attempts. Johnson concluded the season with a .530 on-base percentage and a .694 slugging percentage and also appears on the All-ECAC First Team.
Monte Sherrill was voted ECAC Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons to a 37-5 record and the 2018 ECAC Division III Softball Championship. As a team, Pfeiffer University recorded a batting average of .362 and a slugging percentage of .594.
