ECAC Announces DIII Men's Lacrosse Major Awards & All-ECAC Selections
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2018 Division III Men’s Lacrosse All-ECAC Team and Major Award Winners.
JT Thelen of Stevenson University was voted as the Offensive Player of the Year, while Kyle Tucker from Salisbury University garnered the award for Defensive Player of the Year. Maritime College Attacker Matt DeMeo collected the Rookie of the Year honor, with Cabrini University’s Steve Colfer rounding out the major awards with the Coach of the Year honor.
In 19 games this season, Thelen, the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and First Team honoree has totaled 70 goals and 29 assists for 99 points. The junior also led the Middle Atlantic Conference-Commonwealth in goals per game (3.68) and points per game (5.21). Thelen scored in all but one game this season and had 15 multi-goal games, including an April 10 game at Lycoming College in which he matched program records for goals (9) and points (12) in a game.
Tucker turned in an exceptional senior year for the Sea Gulls appearing in all 21 games, scooping up a team-high 85 groundballs while also tallying another team-best 36 caused turnovers, ranking him third in the conference. The 2018 ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team honoree helped anchor a defense that posted a 6.97 goals against average, which ranks second in the Capital Athletic Conference this season. The defender was also named the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
The 2018 ECAC Rookie of the Year, Matt DeMeo led Maritime College in goals (38), assists (15), points (53) and was second on the team in shots (94). The rookie also led the team with eight man-up goals to go along with 16 goals and a team-best 26 points in league play. The freshman finished sixth in the conference in goals per game (2.53), eighth in assists per game (1.00), and ninth in points per game (3.53).
Colfer collects the ECAC Coach of the Year honor after leading the Cavaliers to a 17-3 record and an 18th consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference title. This season saw Cabrini extend their CSAC win streak to 115 games. Under his leadership this season, 12 players were named All-CSAC, including a league-best 11 selections on the First-Team.
