ECAC Announces Baseball Players of the Week for Week Ending April 22.
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Baseball Players of the Week for the week ending April 22.
DIVISION II
Player of the Week
Jared Melone – Sr., INF, West Chester University
Jared Melone had a strong week as he went 12-for-24 (.500) with two doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored and 14 RBIs. Against Wilmington University, Melone was one of the few Golden Rams who was able to get much of anything going as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the 6-1 loss. The next day against East Stroudsburg University, Melone continued to swing a hot bat as he went 4-for-8 with six RBIs, two runs scored and a home run to help West Chester finish off the season sweep. The senior was right back at it two days later against Kutztown University as he went 3-for-6 with another six RBIs, two runs scored a home run and a double to help carry West Chester to a series opening split.
Pitcher of the Week
Brandon Alberto – Jr., P, New York Institute of Technology
Alberto tossed a five-hit shutout in a seven-inning game against the University of Bridgeport on Saturday as the Bears won 3-0. The junior struck out six without issuing a walk in the contest.
Rookie of the Week
Logan Allen – Fr., INF, University of Bridgeport
Logan Allen continued his fine debut season at the University of Bridgeport last week posting a .455 batting average (5-for-11) with six runs scored and three runs batted in. Allen also had a .636 slugging percentage for the week, as he had two doubles, and his on-base percentage registered .647, as he drew five walks and was hit by a pitch.
DIVISION III - Metro
Player of the Week
Colman Hendershot – Jr., 1B, New York University
Hendershot was 13-for-23 (.565) in five games this week as he crushed six home runs and knocked in 15 runs as the Violets went 4-1. The junior first baseman had at least two hits in all five games, including Friday's 12-7 conference win over Brandeis University when he was 4-for-5 with three home runs and seven RBIs. Hendershot also had a pair of doubles as he slugged 1.435 during the week and came around to score 10 times. He was also perfect in three stolen base attempts.
Pitcher of the Week
Cory Heitler – Jr., P, Ramapo College
Heitler earns Pitcher of the Week honors after leading the Roadrunners to a key 2-0 victory over Rutgers University-Newark. He recorded the first no-hitter for Ramapo College since 1985 and just the third in school-history by registering 9.0 innings of no hit, no run work. The junior struck out 11 in the contest while retiring 28-of-33 batters faced.
Rookie of the Week
Juan Pena – So., OF, New Jersey City University
Pena earns Rookie of the Week honors after hitting .560 (14-for-25) with three doubles, a triple, two stolen bases, nine RBIs and eight runs scored. He hit safely in six-of-the-seven games and produced six multiple-hit contests, including a 3-for-4 performance with a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored in a 16-0 non-conference win over St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn.
DIVISION III – North
Player of the Week
Evan Trausch – So., INF, Vassar College
Trausch had a strong week for Vassar College, hitting .533 with two doubles, two homers and 16 total bases while slugging 1.067 in a 3-3 week. The sophomore was 8-for-15 with six runs scored and five RBIs throughout the week. At the University of Rochester on Wednesday, Trausch became just the second player in program history to homer twice in one game, accomplishing the feat in a 14-5 win over the YellowJackets.
Pitcher of the Week
David Griffin – Sr., P, Curry College
Curry College senior David Griffin enjoyed a big week, going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 13 total innings of work. Griffin’s top performance was a 14-strikeout complete game victory over first-place Roger Williams University, which has lost just two of 12 conference games this season. In the 4-2 victory, Griffin scattered four hits and walked just one. Earlier in the week, Griffin picked up a non-conference win over Becker College. In six innings of work, Griffin permitted just one run on two hits and two walks, while striking out seven.
Rookie of the Week
Andrew Indzonka – Fr., P, Wilkes University
Indzonka helped Wilkes University to three of their five wins last week to clinch a spot in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship. The rookie was brought into three games in high-pressure situations and came out on top all three times earning a win and two saves. The freshman entered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of an 8-6 lead against Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham with the bases loaded and coaxed a fielder’s choice ground out to end the game. Indzonka then entered game two with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and runners at first and second. He slammed the door shut by getting the final hitter to fly out. Against Delaware Valley University, he entered a tie game in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and earned a four-pitch strikeout to close out the game and earn the victory.
DIVISION III – South
Player of the Week
Chris Seibert – Sr., SS, Wesley College
Chris Seibert went 13-for-19 (.684) with two home runs, 12 RBIs, six runs scored and three doubles last week. He continued his on-base streak to 15 games and slugged at 1.158. Seibert went 6-for-6 in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday against Marymount University and then hit a pair of home runs in the nightcap.
Pitcher of the Week
Connor Reeves – Sr., P, Salisbury University
Salisbury University senior Connor Reeves was selected as the Pitcher of the Week after registering a pair of victories on the mound last week for the Sea Gulls. Reeves appeared in two games for Salisbury, including one start and one relief appearance, and earned wins in both. He collected 13 combined strikeouts and did not walk a batter in his 11.1 innings of work. Reeves only allowed one earned run and five total hits for an ERA of 0.79.
Rookie of the Week
Matt Evans – Fr., P, Saint Vincent College
Matt Evans went 2-0 and tossed 5.1 scoreless innings of relief out of the Bearcat bullpen last week. The freshman worked 4.2 scoreless innings in a 5-3 victory over Chatham University on Friday. Evans struck out five, did not issue a walk and limited the opposition to a .211 batting average.
