ECAC Announces Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for Week Ending Feb. 11
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for the week ending Feb. 11.
DIVISION II
Track Athlete of the Week
Felipe Custodio – Jr., Adelphi University
At the Fasttrack Qualifiers Invite, Custodio was the top finisher in the field in the 200-meter event, clocking in at 21.67 for another first-place finish. The rookie’s time marked the Panthers second IC4A/ECAC mark of the day, and landed him another NCAA provisional qualifying time this season.
Rookie of the Week
Isaiah Thomas – Fr., Lincoln University
Thomas anchored Lincoln University’s distance Medley Relay team to a second place finish, completing his 1,600 meter leg in 4:45.87. Lincoln’s time in the event was 11:07.35. He also scored an additional point for the Lions with an eighth place finish in the mile run with a time of 4:50.
DIVISION III – Metro
Track Athlete of the Week
Jeremy Hernandez – Sr., Ramapo College
Hernandez picks up the Track Athlete of the Week honor after a record-setting performance at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University. He clocked the fifth- best mile time in NCAA Division III history and set a new Ramapo College school record with a 4:01.83 time. Hernandez won his heat against NCAA Division I competition and finished tenth overall against NCAA Division I, II, III and unattached runners. His 4:01.83 leads all Division III runners from across the nation this season.
Field Athlete of the Week
Ian Stoner – Sr., U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
Ian Stoner earned an ECAC Qualifying Mark in the shot put last week at the St. Joseph’s Winter Invite. The senior had a toss of 14.50 meters that was good for third place out of 43 competitors. Earlier in the week at the New York University Invitational, his throw of 14.14 meters in the same event was also good for third place out of 40. In the weight throw, Stoner placed 14th with a toss of 13.40 meters and 12th on Sunday with a toss of 12.74 meters.
Rookie of the Week
Ivan Goretoy – Fr., USMMA
Goretoy earned an ECAC Qualifying Mark in the weight throw last week at the St. Joseph’s Winter Invite. He finished in first place out of 36 competitors in the event with a toss of 15.98 meters. The rookie also placed sixth in the weight throw at the New York University Invite with a toss of 14.89 meters. In the shot put, he placed 10th on Friday at 13.17 meters and eighth on Sunday at 12.95 meters.
DIVISION III – North
Track Athlete of the Week
Irie Gourde – Gr., Brandeis University
Gourde ran two top 15 times in Division III this weekend at the Boston University David Hemery Valentines Invitational. In the 400-meter dash, he posted the best time in Division III this year, 47.81 seconds, finishing 12th overall and third among collegiate runners. He is the only runner under 48 seconds so far this year and is ranked 0.38 ahead of the second-fastest time. Gourde also improved to 14th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.87 seconds, 21st overall and second among Division III runners.
Field Athlete of the Week
Seth Spicer – Sr., Alfred University
Senior Seth Spicer won the heptathlon at the 2018 SPIRE NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Invitational last week. His score of 4,978 points broke his previous school record mark of 4,969 points as he defeated his opponents, all from Division I schools such as Hampton University, University of Notre Dame and Penn State University. He also jumped a distance of 5.88 meters in the long jump, ran an 8.80 in the 60-meter hurdles and a 7.46 in the 60-meter dash.
DIVISION III – SOUTH
Track Athlete of the Week
Will McDermott – Sr., Widener University
Ran the second fastest 5,000-meter run in Widener University history at the Boston University Valentine Invitational last week. His time of 14:20.98 placed him 12th overall, but he was the top Division III runner in the field dominated by Division I runners. McDermott’s time is two seconds shy of the Widener and Middle Atlantic Conference overall record time of 14:18.40 set by Macharia Yuot in 2006. The senior’s time is the best in the MAC this season, eighth in Division III and second in the Mideast Region.
Field Athlete of the Week
Logan Lewis – Sr., Franklin & Marshall College
Logan Lewis picked up his fifth gold of the season at the Sunday Invitational hosted by Cornell University last week. His shot-put throw of 15.61 meters earned him the first place mark.
Rookie of the Week
Seth Ray – Fr., Grove City College
Seth Ray won the high jump with a program-best mark of 1.94 meters at the Baldwin Wallace’s Mid-February Meet last week. The rookie also took third in the triple jump with a leap of 12.80 meters and marked at 6.16 meters in the long jump, good for eighth place.
