ECAC Announces 2018 DI FBS Football Major Awards & All-ECAC Teams
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced its 2018 Division I FBS All-ECAC Team & Major Awards.
Syracuse University bring home three awards, with quarterback Eric Dungey winning Offensive Player of the Year, defensive back Andre Cisco Winning Defensive Rookie of the year, and coach Dino Babers taking home Coach of the Year. Bryton Barr from the University of Massachusetts won Defensive player of the year, while Adam Klein of Temple University won Offensive Rookie of the year.
Dungey, a senior from Lake Oswego, OR led Syracuse to a 9-3 record under center. Syracuse offensive team captain completed 60 percent of his passes for 2565 yards and 17 touchdowns. Dungey added 732 yards on the ground and 15 rushing touchdowns. He is one of nine FBS quarterbacks with 2,000+ passing yards and 500+ rushing yards this season. Dungey now has 32 TDs responsible for in 2018, eclipsing the previous Orange season record of 30 established by Donovan McNabb in 1998.
Barr, a grad student from Camp Hill, PA tied for third-most total tackles (147) and tied for fourth-most tackles per game (12.3) in FBS during 2018. His 21 tackles against Charlotte stand tied for the ninth-most in a single game in FBS this season and are the most in one game in the FBS history of the UMass program. Barr added four sacks during the year and on interception and did not record a game of less than eight tackles all season.
Klein, a freshman from Springfield, PA was the only freshman in the nation to start at least nine games at left tackle all season. Playing multiple positions on the line, Klein led the way for a rushing offense that ran for 1974 yards and 26 touchdowns for an average of 164.5 yards per game.
Cisco, a freshman from Valley Stream, NY was named ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year and the only true freshman to make All-ACC First Team. Cisco tied for the national lead in interceptions with seven. Cisco’s 16 passes defended (7 interceptions, 9 pass break ups) rank second nationally among freshmen and are the highest season total ever for a Syracuse true freshman.
Coach Babers led the Orange to a 9-3 record and is a George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Semifinalist. Babers led Syracuse to a second-place finish in the ACC Atlantic Division after being picked to finish last during the preseason and earned the program’s first national ranking since the 2001 season, rising as high as No. 12 in the Associated Press, Amway Coaches, and CFP Top 25 polls the week of Nov. 11. Orange are currently ranked in the top 10 nationally in third-down defense (6th - .281), fumbles recovered (tied for 3rd - 13), interceptions (tied for 5th - 17), turnover margin (tied for 4th - +1.17) and turnovers gained (tied for 1st - 30).
