ECAC Announces Football Players of the Week for Week Ending Sept. 24
DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Football Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 24.
DIVISION II
Offensive Player of the Week
Marc Jones – JR, RB, Gannon University
Entering the day as the leading rusher in NCAA Division II, Jones broke the PSAC record for rushing yards in a game with 354 last Saturday against No. 21 Slippery Rock and finished 64 yards shy of the NCAA Division II record. The junior also broke the school record for rushing yards and all-purpose yards (449) and tied program records for rushing touchdowns (4) and total touchdowns (5). Overall, Jones finished with 354 rushing yards, four rushing TDs, four receptions, 95 receiving yards, one receiving TD, 449 all-purpose yards and five total TDs.
Defensive Player of the Week
Matthew Corrie – SR, LB, Pace University
Corrie was all over the field on Saturday, piling up a game-high 12 tackles against the University of New Haven. He also recovered a fumble, and forced another with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Corrie, the Setters' leading tackler a year ago, is once again leading the team with 31 total tackles, three forced fumbles and six tackles for loss this season. He also has a pair of sacks and an interception.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Jarod Morrison – JR, P, Gannon University
Morrison averaged 58.3 yards on three punts against No. 21 Slippery Rock last Saturday. His game-long punt was 65-yards. The junior is now averaging 47.9 yards on 12 punts this season, and half of his 12 punts have traveled over 50 yards and five have been placed inside the 20-yard line.
Rookie of the Week
Jimmy Keefe – R-FR, QB, Gannon University
Keefe almost helped Gannon pull an upset of No. 21 Slippery Rock last week. He was perfect in the third quarter, going 3-for-3 with 41 yards and one touchdown as Gannon regained a lead after previously trailing 27-13. Keefe scored a rushing touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line with eight second left in the first half, cutting the deficit to 27-20 at halftime. The redshirt-freshman added 88 yards and one touchdown as the lead exchanged hands four times in the final 15 minutes.
DIVISION III - North
Offensive Player of the Week
Alex Corvese – SR, QB, Curry College
Corvese accounted for both of Curry’s touchdowns in their narrow, 17-14, defeat at the hands of Union on Saturday. He completed 22 of 35 passes for a 62.9 completion percentage while racking up 216 yards and touchdown. Corvese also rushed 10 times for 39 yards and another score.
Defensive Player of the Week
Tyler Collins – SR, S, Misericordia University
Collins anchored the Cougars’ defense that allowed just one offensive score in a 43-14 win over Wilkes. The senior led the team with 13 tackles, including eight solo tackles. The safety came up big late in the first half, when he intercepted a pass at Misericordia’s one-yard line on the final play of the second quarter and returned it 19 yards. Collins added another pass break-up in the win.
DIVISION III – South
Offensive Player of the Week
E.J. Lee – SO, RB, Wesley College
Lee helped No. 22 Wesley improve to 2-0 in conference with a 66-0 road win at William Paterson. The 2016 NJAC Co-Offensive Rookie of the Year averaged 9.8 yards per carry, finishing the contest with 128 yards on just 13 attempts. He also scored five first half rushing touchdowns. Lee currently leads the NJAC in both rushing (159.3 yards per game) and scoring (16.0 points per game).
Defensive Player of the Week
Darin Hungerford – SR, LB, Kean University
Hungerford helped the Cougars claim their first victory of the season with a 28-14 road win at Southern Virginia. He finished the contest with a game-high 14 tackles, including eight solo stops. The senior also registered two tackles for a loss in a defensive performance which saw Kean hold the Knights scoreless through the game’s first 41 minutes.
Special Teams Player of the Week/ Rookie of the Week
Christian Hagans – FR, K-P, Albright College
Hagans kicked the game-winning field goal with three seconds remaining from 29-yards out to give the Lions a 9-7 win over Widener in the 67th Annual Rajah Shrine Pretzel Bowl. The win kept the Lions undefeated on the season. The freshman added eight punts in the game with three fair catches and five landing inside the Pride’s 20-yard line.
