Bridgeport Captures Ninth-Straight ECAC DII Women's Gymnastics Championship
FINAL RESULTS
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The University of Bridgeport totaled 194.925 points as a team to capture its ninth-straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Women’s Gymnastics Championship, held Saturday on the campus of West Chester University.
The host Golden Rams finished in second with a team mark of 192.875, while Southern Connecticut State University ended the competition with 190.050 to take third.
A convincing showing in the all-around boosted the Knights’ championship efforts. Bridgeport’s Kelsey Campbell finished first in the all-around with a mark of 39.125, just ahead of WCU’s Majesta Valentine (39.000), while teammate Maya Reimers finished in third with a total of 38.825.
In addition to the all-around, UB also posted a on the uneven bars, and swept the top four spots on vault behind a winning effort from Kimberly Stewart (9.825). Briana Comport then took first on the balance beam (9.900), and tied with Valentine for first in the floor exercise with a score of 9.875, as UB wrapped up its 20th ECAC team title.
At the conclusion of the meet, the ECAC also handed out yearly individual honors, as voted by head coaches.
Valentine capped a stellar collegiate career with her second Athlete of the Year honor is as many seasons. Bridgeport’s Comport was voted the Specialist of the Year, with Reimers earning Rookie of the Year. West Chester Head Coach Barbara Cordova was voted by her peers as the Coach of the Year, and SCSU’s Linda Mullin was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
Kathleen Aberger of SCSU and Bridgeport senior Christine Liataud also collected yearly awards, as they received recognition as Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
