ECAC Announces 2012 Division III Upstate Softball All-Star Team
CENTERVILLE, Mass.-The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2012 Division III Upstate Softball All-Star Team on Tuesday. Receiving individual awards, Sandy Hollander and Marie Curran of Buffalo State College are the ECAC Coaches of the Year, SUNY Cortland outfielder Meaghan Kohler is the Player of the Year, and sisters Ashley and Brittany Marshall from Plattsburgh State are the ECAC Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, respectively.
A first-team All-American, Kohler set a single-season school record with 17 home runs and 68 runs batted in. Those totals also ranked second and first, respectively, in Division III. Batting .359 for the season, she registered 12 doubles and finished with a .763 slugging percentage. The State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Year helped the Red Dragons to a 41-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Amherst College Regional round.
The SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, Ashley Marshall helped Plattsburgh take home the SUNYAC Tournament title on her way to being named the conference tournament and NCAA Amherst Regional Most Valuable Player. Marshall became just the third Plattsburgh player to be named an All-American and the first to receive second-team honors. The junior appeared in 38 games compiling a 1.53 earned-run average over 196.1 innings pitched, while striking out 275 batters. Her 25 wins set a Cardinal single-season high. She led the Cardinal to just their second SUNYAC and NCAA regional championships.
The younger Marshall became the first player in Plattsburgh history to be named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. She made an instant impact in the Cardinals lineup at the shortstop position and at the plate by finishing the season with a team-high 48 runs scored and setting a single-season school record with 33 stolen bases. She also was second on the team with 48 hits and third in batting average (.345).
Hollander and Curran shared the SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors after a challenging season at Buffalo State. Hollander, a four-time SUNYAC Coach of the Year recipient, led the Bengals to a 5-5 start before being hospitalized. Curran, an assistant coach, took over the reins behind the bench and helped the Bengals will their way to a sweep of RIT just two days after the passing of Hollander, their long-time coach. The Bengals made the SUNYAC playoffs for the 19th time, finishing with a 10-8 conference record.
