SLU, Oneonta Combine for 10 ECAC Men's Soccer All-Stars

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference has announced on Wednesday the ECAC Division III Upstate Men’s Soccer All-Star Team, as voted on by the membership in the region. ECAC Offensive Player of the Year Sam DeMello of Saint Lawrence University heads the 22-player squad, along with Saints teammate Alex Laird as the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and ECAC Rookie of the Year Justin Rivera from Oneonta State.

DeMello, a junior midfielder who was the unanimous Liberty League Player of the Year, earned NSCAA All-America honors for the second straight year, earning a first-team citation this season. The Williston-Northhampton High School (Easthampton, Mass.) product set a Saint record for points in a season with 38 on 14 goals and 10 assists. A clutch player, he scored six game-winning goals and assisted on five others that put his team ahead for good.

A junior back out of Monroe (N.Y.) Woodbury High School, Laird joined DeMello on the 2011 NSCAA All-America First Team. He had two goals and six points while anchoring a SLU defensive corps that surrendered just eight goals in 20 games and notched 16 shutouts, which led the nation in scoring defense. He was the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year.

Rivera, of Bay Shore (N.Y.) High School, posted five goals and four assists for 14 points en route to State University of New York Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year and conference all-tournament honors. The freshman midfielder started in 16 of 23 games played. The Red Dragons swept the SUNYAC regular-season and tournament titles, won a school-record 18 games and reached the national semifinals.
