UMass Sports Information

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass junior goalie Doc Schneider was named the Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week on Tuesday. He came up huge for the Minutemen in their season opener over the weekend, stopping 19 shots and allowing just four goals in a win over Hofstra. That win vaulted UMass from 20th to 15th in this week's Nike/Inside Lacrosse Men's DI Media Poll and improved Schneider's career mark to 21-12. UMass looks to go to 2-0 this weekend, heading to southern Connecticut to face Yale, a team which topped it a year ago by a goal.

On Monday, UMass junior lacrosse players Tim Balise and Doc Schneider each earned ECAC weekly honors after big games in UMass' season-opening win over No. 17 Hofstra on Saturday. Balise was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week after four goals while Schneider was the Co-Defensive Player of the Week after 19 saves.

Balise tallied a career-best four goals in the victory, scoring half of UMass' goals. Schneider tied his career-high with 19 saves. He made 12 in the second half as UMass allowed just four goals in the game with great defense.

Schneider was also named one of three UMass Athletes of the Week on Monday.
