Georgetown Sports Information
Washington, D.C. - Two members of the Georgetown University men's lacrosse team were selected to represent the United States in the 2008 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) Under-19 World Championship. The 2008 United States Men's U-19 team was selected by the 24-person Player Selection Committee following tryouts held from July 12-15 at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
The 23-man United States roster includes 16 recent high school graduates, five rising high school seniors and two current collegians representing seven states. The players were selected from a group of 120 invited to try out. The ILF U-19 World Championship is set for July 3-12, 2008 in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
Representing Georgetown will be rising sophomore Craig Dowd (Northport, N.Y./East Northport) and incoming freshman Robert Boyle (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Lawrenceville).
Dowd, one of six attackmen on the team and one of only two collegians, enjoyed a standout season for the Hoyas as a freshman. He finished third on the team in scoring with 17 goals and eight assists for 25 points, ranking fourth on the squad in goals scored. Dowd was one of four attackman to lead the Blue and Gray throughout the season, scoring a career-high four goals versus Hobart, but came on strong during the last five games, scoring 12 points in that span. He tied his career high of five points (three goals, two assists) in a 9-4 win over Penn State in the regular season finale and scored three goals in the team's 9-8 NCAA Tournament win over Princeton.
Boyle, one of a group of 10 incoming freshmen for the Hoyas in 2007-08, was one of six defenders selected to the team.
The selections of Dowd and Boyle extend the recent of run of
Hoya success on the international stage. Recent graduates have
represented not only the United States National Team, but the
Canadian National Team as well. Brodie Merrill (B'05) was named the
top defensive player at the ILF World Championship in 2006, leading
Team Canada to the team championship. Current Hoya assistant coach
Scott Urick (C'00) and former All-American Kyle Sweeney (C'03) were
members of the United States National Team during the 2006 World
Championship.
Georgetown finished the season with a 12-3 overall record, advanced
to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth-straight
year, was selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament for the
11th-straight year and won the ECAC Lacrosse League Championship
for the second-straight season and the sixth time since the league
was formed in 2000.
