ECAC Women's East Championship Weekend Set

The ECAC Women's East Semifinals are set to begin on Saturday, March 7 at The Playland Ice Casino, home of the Manhattanville College Valiants. The Championship will be decided on Sunday, March 8 at 3:00 p.m. Fifth seeded Salve Regina University pulled off the 7-2 upset of UMass Boston to make their way to the Semifinals. Manhattanville topped Castleton 5-2 in their quarterfinal game, while Southern Maine beat New England College 3-0 to propel them into the Semifinals. Norwich University survived a tough test from MIT 4-3 to round out the Semifinal field. Manhattanville College had won the ECAC Women's East Tournament for its seventh straight year.
In the first Semifinal the top seeded Manhattanville Valiants will host the Seahawks of Salve Regina University. The game will be played on Saturday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. and live stats and audio will be broadcasted on www.GoValiants.com. The two clubs first met early on this season at Salve Regina with the Valiants coming away with a 5-0 win. Karine Turmel (Ste-Marguerite, Quebec/Notre Dame Hounds) picked up the shutout in net for Manhattanville. Salve Regina and Manhattanville met again January 6 at The Playland Ice Casino with the Valiants skating to a 4-0 win.
In their first round playoff win Manhattanville freshman Monique Rafferty (Clifton Park, New York/Northwood Prep) recorded a hat-trick, while sophomore Shannon Coffey (Malden, Massachusetts/North American Hockey Academy) and freshman Michele Wieczorek (Mountain Lakes, New Jersey/Culver) added a goal apiece. In the Seahawks first round win sophomore Molly Golden (Milton, Massachusetts/Milton) recorded two goals and an assist while senior Caitlin Campbell (Hingham, Massachusetts/Archbishop Williams) added two goals.
In the second Semifinal third seeded Southern Maine will face seconded seeded Norwich University on Saturday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. Norwich University got the best of Southern Maine in both games this season, winning 4-2 in both games. Norwich will look to junior Sophie Leclerc (Barre, Vermont/Spaulding) who has 36 points on 12 goals and 24 assists to lead them past the Huskies this weekend.
In their first round win Southern Maine got two goals from sophomore Amanda Shorey (Ayer, Massachusetts/Lunenburg/Ayer HS) while freshman Katie Paradis (Rochester, New Hampshire/Lady Freeze) added three helpers for the Huskies. Freshman Kristen Gresko (Pheonix, Arizona/Vermont Academy) earned the shutout for the Huskies, making 18 saves.
A Champion will be decided on Sunday, March 8 at 3:00 p.m. when the winners of the two Semifinal games meet in the Championship.
