New England Hockey Writers Association Names ECAC Northeast All-Stars; UMass Dartmouth's Grant Named MVP

Cape Cod, Mass. - The New England Hockey Writers Association (NEHWA) announced its 2007-08 ECAC Northeast All-Star Team last week. A total of thirteen players and coaches were honored representing five league members. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Nichols College, and Curry College all had three honorees, with Suffolk University and Johnson and Wales each receiving two selections.

Goaltender Jeff Green, defenseman Tyler Crocker and forward Jeff Grant of UMass Dartmouth were all selected All-Stars by the NEHWA. The Corsairs won the ECAC Northeast Tournament and earned a bid into the 2008 NCAA Men's Division III Ice Hockey Tournament. Junior goalie Jeff Green led the ECAC Northeast with a 2.47 goals against average, while recording a 17-9-1 record on the season. The Medway, Mass. product saw action in 27 games for the Corsairs and notched a .899 save percentage in just over 1500 minutes of action. Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, Mass) solidified a UMass Dartmouth defense that surrendered a league best 2.39 goals per game. The senior totaled 17 points, scoring six goals to go along with 11 assists. Jeff Grant (Burlington, Mass) was the top Corsair scorer netting 17 goals for a total of 38 points. Grant has also been named the Northeast Most Valuable Player for the 2007-08 season by the New England hockey Writers Association.

Nichols College defensemen Jeff Bieber, forward Anthony Monte, and head coach Lou Izzi were all honored by the NEHWA. Jeff Bieber (Littleton, Colo.) scored five goals on the season and added 16 helpers for a total of 21 points and was the third highest scoring defenseman in the ECAC Northeast. Anthony Monte was the leading scorer in the ECAC Northeast for the 2007-08 season. The Chicago, Illinois native notched 22 goals and 29 assists for a total of 51 points on the season. The junior was a key component of a Nichols scoring offense that averaged 4.54 goals per game, tops in the ECAC Northeast. Nichols College head coach Lou Izzi was named the 2007-08 NEHWA ECAC Northeast Coach of the Year. Izzi led the Bison to a 20-7-1 mark, the best record in the programs history.

Curry College defenseman Jarrett Sousa, and forwards Jason Yuel, and Jeffrey Hazelwood all represent the Colonials on the NEHWA All-Star team. Jarrett Sousa (Providence, R.I.) was tied for the team lead among defensemen with 14 points on two goals and 12 assists. The junior was a big part of a stingy Colonial defense that allowed an average of 2.88 goals per game, good for the second lowest average in the league. Junior Jeffrey Hazelwood and rookie sensation Jason Yuel led a Curry scoring offense that averaged 4.50 goals per game. The scoring output was second highest in the ECAC Northeast. Hazelwood (Dublin, Calif.) scored 18 goals and notched 27 helpers for 45 points, putting him fourth in the league. Yuel (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was the top scoring rookie in the ECAC Northeast with 46 points (22-24-46).

Suffolk goalie Jeff Rose and forward Dan Pencinger were named to the NEHWA Northeast All-Star team. Freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) posted an even 13-13-0 record on the year, while recording a .914 saves percentage and 3.12 goals against average. Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) finished the season tied for second in goals in the ECAC Northeast with 22. The senior also added 13 assists for a total of 35 points.

Defenseman Mike O'Malley and forward Matt McGilvray are the two Johnson and Wales players named to the NEHWA All-Star team. Junior Mike O'Malley (Woonsocket, R.I.) led the Wildcats in defensemen scoring with 20 points on five goals and 15 helpers. Matt McGilvray (Rochester, N.H.) led the ECAC Northeast in goals with 28. The senior was the second leading point getter in the ECAC Northeast with 48 points (28-20-48).
