Purchase, N.Y. - Former Manhattanville men's hockey star Jason Murfitt (Ottawa, Ontario), who graduated this year as the school's all-time leader in every major offensive category, has signed a professional contract with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League, Blazers head coach Doug Sauter announced recently.

Murfitt rewrote the Manhattanville record books in his four seasons at the school, averaging over a point per game for his career with 126 points in 106 games. In his senior season, Murfitt became the school's all-time leader in goals (53), assists (73), points (126), power-play goals (18) and games played (106), while also increasing his school-record game-winning goals total to 13.

The Ottawa, Ontario, native completed his stellar four-year career by scoring 10 goals and assisting on a team-high 21 helpers for 31 points, placing him second on the team in 2007-08. Murfitt's breakout season came as a sophomore in 2005-06, when he led the Valiants with 43 points (16-27-43) in 27 games on his way to ECAC West Player of the Year and USCHO.com All-East Region honors. Manhattanville reached the NCAA Tournament all four seasons with Murfitt on the ice and won a total of five ECAC West regular season and tournament championships over that span.

"Jason is just the kind of player that we need to add to our roster," Sauter said in a press release announcing the signing.  "He has excellent size, can skate and has shown that he can compete.  I believe he will fit in nicely in our scheme for the coming season."

With the signing, Murfitt becomes the 17th player in the nine-year history of the men's hockey program to play professionally. Former teammate Andrew Gallant was one of three Valiants signed to pro deals last season and spent most of last season playing with the Arizona Sundogs of the CHL.
