PLATTSBURGH, NY - After losing a heartbreaker in the NCAA
semifinal against host No.1 SUNY Plattsburgh, the Soaring Eagles
looked to this afternoons third place game against No. 6 Wisconsin
Superior to take retribution.
Riding the stellar play of Captain Cara McGurry '08 (Winnipeg, MB
- St. John's Ravencourt) and her 31 save shut out performance, the
Soaring Eagles would tally 3 goals en route to capturing the third
place spot in this years NCAA Championship.
Elmira would take no time in taking the lead in the first period
as third year player Jamie Huntley '09 (La Jolla, CA - California
Selects) would notch a goal just over 30 seconds into the period on
an assist by Kayla Coady '09 (Charlottetown, PEI - Berkshire
School) and Jamie Kivi '10 (Green Bay, WI - Little Caesars).
The Soaring Eagles would not be finished as they would notch on
one more goal at 14:47 into the first period as fourth year player
Rebecca Coakley '08 (Chelmsford, MA - Pomfret School) would find
Lauryn DePaul '10 (Liverpool, NY - Syracuse Stars) who would score
her thirteenth goal of the year to put the Soaring Eagles up 2-0
entering intermission.
The second period would be a different story as Elmira would find
themselves being out shot for the second period in a row. However,
Elmira's staunch and proven defense in front of netminder Cara
McGurry would prove to be the deciding factor as they would shut
down the Wisconsin Superior attack.
As the third period started the Purple and Gold would look to step
up their game and would out shoot Wisconsin Superior 11-5. The
final goal of the game would come late in the period off the stick
of Karen Colehour '10 (Schenectady, NY - Albany Ice Cats) on
Coady's second assist of the game. The goal would put the lead well
out of reach and would seal the victory for the Soaring Eagles.
