With a 3-0 victory over Richard Stockton College, the New York
University women's soccer team captured the 2011 Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Championship on
Sunday, November 13, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The ECAC title is the second in Violet history, as the squad also
captured the crown in 2001.
With the victory, NYU (14-6) not only won the second ECAC
Championship in school history but also broke the school record for
victories in a season (the 2001 team held the previous record with
a mark of 13-5-1). The 2011 Violets also shattered the school
record for goals in a season, netting 49 to break the previous mark
of 41 (2000).
“We're all very excited,” said NYU head coach
Michele
Canning of the team's ECAC crown. “We played great
soccer tonight, and we're really happy with how much progress we've
made over the course of the year.”
Cami
Crawford scored two of NYU's goals in the title game
victory over the Ospreys (15-7-4), while Serra
Tumay also netted a goal en route to being named the
tournament's Most Oustanding Player. Tumay had a goal and an assist
in the Violets' 3-2 victory over New Jersey City University in the
ECAC semifinals.
Crawford opened the scoring just 5:32 in. She took a short drop
pass from Natalie
Beach at the right edge of the box and placed a shot into
the top left corner.
With the Violets controlling possession in the first half, Tumay
broke through for a second goal just five minutes before halftime.
Claire
Shanahan collected a loose ball at the top of the box and
played a pass back to Tumay, who also placed a shot into the top
left corner.
Crawford sealed the victory in the 71st minute on a fantastic
individual effort. She won the ball near midfield and raced all the
way downfield to bury a shot past the charging Richard Stockton
goalkeeper.
For the game, the Ospreys held a slim 8-7 edge in shots, six of
which came in the second half as they fought to get back into it.
Meg
Patten totaled five saves in goal for the Violets, while
Sarah Hinkle made one stop for Richard Stockton.
Tumay finished the season with a team highs of eight assists (tying
the single-season school record) and 22 points (fifth-most in a
season in school history). Crawford ended 2011 with 20 points, tied
for the third-most by a freshman in NYU history.
